Design & Sustainability

 

The design is purposely simple and adaptable to encourage a variety of uses. Highlights include a dramatic steel arbor and a green storm water management system that captures runoff from the Plaza to feed two rain gardens and an underground infiltration system. By retaining storm water on-site, the Plaza’s design reduces stress on the city’s combined sewer system during storms, helping to prevent overflow of untreated sewage into the Bay.

Mint Plaza provides a welcome social gathering space and destination with thoughtful design, beautifully-restored historic architecture and unique mix of San Francisco-based restaurants and cafes including, Blue Bottle Café, Chez Papa Resto, 54 Mint, and soon to open Thermidor. The Plaza is anchored by Mezzanine, a world-class music, entertainment and lifestyle venue located in a historic two-story warehouse. And most recently, FoMP invited flower cart vendor, Cheri Mims of Lilybelle to the Plaza; Cheri provides local and organically sourced fresh cut flowers, orchids and succulents.

Friends of Mint Plaza sponsors a variety of live-music and art events, including Music on Mint Plaza Summer Concert Series from July through September, arts and music festival, Summerland, and other free community events. In the upcoming year, FoMP seeks to expand its programming to include theater, film, dance and visual arts, and hold festivals to celebrate special local populations and the SOMA arts community.
